Newport’s wide range of Fiber Optic Coupler products have been developed using fused fiber technology. The optical fiber couplers allow bi-directional coupling and can be used to either split or combine signals. Newport's 1x4, 1x8 and 1x16 fiber optic couplers are available with single wavelength, wavelength flattened, and broadband types.

Fused Biconical Taper Construction
A fused coupler consists of two, parallel optical fibers that have been twisted, stretched and fused together so that their cores are very close to each other. This forms a coupling region with the length determining the coupling ratio from one fiber to the other. During the manufacturing process, light is launched into an input port and the output power from each output port is carefully monitored. When the desired coupling ratio is achieved, the fully automated manufacturing process is stopped. The resulting coupler is essentially one fiber with two cores that are very near to one another. This process is known as the Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) process.
Wavelength Flattened Fiber Optic Couplers
Wavelength flattened fiber optic couplers extend the optimal wavelength range to a band of ±40 nm around the center wavelength of 1550 nm. The wavelength flattened couplers are ideal solutions for applications that require some spectral range around 1550 nm. These devices come in 1x8 and 1x16 configurations.
Single Wavelength Fiber Optic Couplers
Single wavelength couplers provide optimal performance at the design center wavelengths of 1310 or 1550 nm. These devices are designed for the specified wavelengths and come with 1x4 configurations at both 1310 and 1550 nm as well as a 1x8 configuration at 1550 nm.
Broadband Fiber Optic Couplers
Our Broadband couplers optimized to work over both the 1310 and 1550 nm windows. This allows users the versatility to use a single device at both wavelengths. These devices come in 1x4 and 1x8 configurations.
