Our large area optical receivers operate from the UV to the IR spectrum for laser or signal detection from 190 to 1750 nm. The large photodetectors used in these designs make alignment easy. You can tweak your experiment without worrying about the beam wandering off the photodetector. Just position the photodetector close to where you think the laser beam is and you’ll see a signal. No more time-consuming and tedious photoreceiver alignment procedures.
- Large photodetector diameter for easy alignment
- Adjustable gain settings
- Compact housing for tight spaces See All Features

Battery Powered to Reduce Noise
These photoreceivers are battery powered so you’ll need only a single coaxial cable to connect the photodetector to other instruments. This eliminates ground loops, the most common source of noise. (A non-conductive pad electrically isolates the case from the table, further eliminating noise pickup.) To ensure long battery life, we build these photoreceivers using amplifiers with low-current draws. If you’re unsure about the battery status, the built-in battery check can tell you instantly whether or not the battery is good.
Using Filters and Optical Fiber
Newport offers accessories that can be used to attach a filter or optical fiber to these photoreceivers. For example, a colored glass filter to remove unwanted wavelengths or a neutral-density filter to attenuate the optical power incident on the photodetector can be mounted with the 1280 filter holder accessory. Model 1281 is an FC fiber adapter that allows an FC-connectorized fiber to be attached in front of these photoreceivers. Both accessories are sold separately and not included with the photoreceiver.
