Simple Lamp Alignment Process
Due to small manufacturing differences between lamps, the rear reflector position and lamp position relative to the condenser lens must be adjusted when a new lamp is installed in the housing. Adjustment knobs located on the exterior of the lamp housing allow for optimum positioning of the lamp and rear reflector.
Rear Reflector for Increased Light Output
A rear reflector is built into the lamp housing to collect back scatter from the lamp that would otherwise be lost. An estimated 60% increase in output intensity from the lamp housing is observed due to this rear reflector. Due to small manufacturing differences between lamps, the rear reflector needs to be adjusted when a new lamp is installed.

Three Different Flange Sizes Available
Output flanges of 1.5 inches, 2 inches, and 3 inches are coupled to the output of these Research Lamp Housings. The output flange size determines the diameter of the collimated output beam and should also be considered based on what component the lamp housing will be coupled to. Flange couplers and adaptors for interchanging between different flange sizes are offered if this is required to couple the lamp housing to a monochromator or other piece of equipment.
Interchangeable Lamps
Oriel® offers Research Lamp Housings capable of operating two different ranges of lamp wattages: 50 to 500 W and 450 to 1000 W. All Xenon, Mercury-Xenon, and Mercury arc lamps can be operated in the lamp housing that matches their lamp wattage. The appropriate socket adapter, Lamp Housing Interconnection Cable, and Arc Lamp Power Supply is also necessary to operate the lamp. Check out the Compatibility guide below for more information.
Three Different Lens Types Used
- Plano Convex: Most economic lens option, utilizes an asymmetric lens shape to minimize spherical aberration
- Aspheric: The front surface of an aspheric lens gradually changes in curvature from the center of the lens to the edge. This shape reduces spherical aberration more effectively than a Plano Convex Lens
- Aspherab™: This lens configuration provides the highest quality output light. Four different lenses are used in a unique configuration to provide light output that is nearly free from spherical aberration.
Arc Lamp Safety
Arc lamps may emit dangerous levels of UV radiation depending on their source type. Ensure that only authorized personnel are in the vicinity of the source, and wearing the necessary safety equipment such as UV protective eyewear, clothing, and gloves. Lighted UV warning signs, posted outside laboratory doors where UV sources are operating, can prevent accidental exposure. Newport also recommends using an electronic shutter to block the beam when the source is not in use but remains turned on. Alternatively, the beam can be safely contained by using beam tubes or fiber optic cables to deliver the light to a sample. It is recommended to vent the ozone that is produced by some lamp models to the outside or use the 66087 Ozone Eater.
