Active, Tuned, and Broadband Damping Performance
SST Series SmartTable HD optical table top delivers the best damping performance among all table tops. Broadband damping is provided by a 4.8 mm thick table skin, a constrained layer core that attenuates broadband vibration, a damped working surface that eliminates skin resonance, and a composite edge finish that eliminates sidewall resonance. Two precision tuned dampers selectively eliminate two fundamental structural table modes and their entire harmonics. Two IQ active dampers effectively address medium frequency resonances of optical tables by sensing the vibrations and driving shakers at the opposite phase of the vibrations to cancel them out.
The compliance curve shows the positional motion of the structure for a given excitation force and frequency. The dashed red line is the rigid body line showing how an ideal optical table would perform with no relative motion. The blue line shows the natural frequencies of the optical table and how they these deviate from that of a rigid body. The red line shows the full damping performance of the table top with active damping turned on.
Tuned Mass Damping - The Most Effective Passive Damping Method
Hybrid Damped and Upgradable SmartTable® optical table systems feature precision Tuned Mass Damping (TMD) technology to eliminate table resonances. TMD is the most effective method among all known passive damping methods, as it concentrates damping efforts where it's needed at the frequencies of dominant resonance modes. It is widely used in various industries for its efficiency and effectiveness of damping, such as the famous Grand Canyon Skywalk, Taipei 101 Building, and NASA's Ares I rocket. Compared to our top competitor's broadband damping methods which absorbs a moderate amount of vibration energy equally over the broadband, our tuned mass damping method targets at resonances and as a result is much more effective. The precisely tuned dampers work from as low as 25 Hz and go all the way up to 525 Hz, creating opportunity for optimum damping on larger optical tables, the resonances of which often fall outside of competitor's broadband frequency range. Once tuned at factory the dampers are locked securely and the frequency would not shift during shipping of the table.
Intelligent Q (IQ) Active Damping Technology
At the core of our SmartTable optical table tops is an advanced damping technology called Intelligent Q (IQ) Damping. It effectively addresses the medium frequency resonances of optical tables from 80 to 550 Hz by incorporating two pairs of sensors and actuators in the optical table top design. An external controller is used to coordinate the signal processing, enabling a fast and accurate damping response. Each sensor-actuator pair is controlled by a separate control channel. The sensor senses the vibrations and the actuator outputs a signal to compensate for the vibrations. The pre-amplifiers and band-pass filters condition the sensor output signal before feeding it to the digital controller. The digital controller implements recursive filters that compensate for the dynamic response of the shaker and correct the phase to bring the phase difference between the displacement and force close to (-π/2) in the desired frequency range.
Easy Set-up with One-Button Auto Tuning
SmartTable active damping products are easy to set up and operate. Simply connect the IQ dampers with controller and press "Auto-Tune" button on the controller, the system will automatically find the resonances of the table and set gain parameters. Once the tuning is finished, the dampers will start working to damp vibrations on your tabletop real time. This feature also enables users to improve their table performance under different payload or payload distributions - press "Auto-Tune" when you have a major change in your set up to achieve the maximized damping performance.
24/7 Vibration Monitoring Capability
The ST-300 active damping controller comes with powerful and intuitive software that allows user to generate FFT plots, time response plots and save graphs or export data for further analysis. The ST-300 software also provides time continuous 10 to 820 Hz vibration data monitoring that could be used as a system trouble shooting tool for long duration experiments.

With IQ active damping and precision tuned passive damping technologies in one table top, SST Series provides most accurate and timely compensation across the entire working ranges of the actuator-sensor pairs, delivering a quietest working surface for any challenging applications.
Super Rigid Trussed Honeycomb Core Design
The honeycomb core in our optical tables is different than our competitors. Each piece of the corrugated honeycomb steel sheet is emerged in proprietary elastomeric vibration absorbing materials and bonded vertically throughout the height of the optical breadboard or optical table, creating a much stiffer honeycomb core structure. This labor intensive procedure makes sure that Newport's optical breadboard or optical table has the most robust honeycomb structures.

Optical Table Support Options
We offer three types of supports for our optical tables. S-2000A Series pneumatic vibration isolators with automatic re-leveling provide industry leading vibration isolation performance, and includes an integrated, mechanical height adjustment system to allow improved table leveling, height control and compensation for non-level floors. SL Series closed pneumatic vibration isolators offer vibration isolation at a very affordable price when automatic re-leveling is not required. The isolators remove floor vibrations in the 10 Hz to 50 Hz range and support a wide variety of less rigorous research and production applications. RL Series non-isolating support legs offer rigid high load support where vibration isolation is not required.
